Vaughn

Quick Facts

The Ulm Pishkun (Buffalo Jump) was first started in
500 A.D. and went on until the mid-1800's--Today
it is a state monument, it holds bone deposits and
teepee rings left from Indian encampments.

Vaughn was founded in 1869, by Robert Vaughn.

Tom Couch named the town, Vaughn, after it's
founder Robert Vaughn.

December 25, 1884, the fiercest battle between the
Black Feet and the Crows took place about a mile
West of Taft Hill.

The Vaughn Mansion was completed in 1889 and
the barn was completed in 1890.

The Sunnyside Store was opened in September 1893.

The old Power Morgan Store, which is now the
Depot, is owned by the Wohlgemuths'.

On June 21, 1920 the Vaughn Hotel was held up.
The robbers got away with $900.

In 1910, the Boozman-Power Lumberyard, was
a very important business for the town.

Mrs. Lucretia Hubbard Penwell was post master
at Vaughn for 11 years, from 1919-1929 after
acting Postmaster in 1918.

The Vaughn school was built in 1918-1919.

C.W. Penwell operated the elevator from 1924-1931.

Clyde Penwell built the round Drive-In by hand in 1930.

In 1935 George Wohlgemuth helped bring electricity to Vaughn.

The Vaughn Hotel burned down on May 23, 1940.

The Drive-In was used until March 1942.

Lillie Bailey was the Postmaster from 1936-1978, she
was acting Postmaster from 1930-1936.

Vaughn was a very important stop for the railroad,
final trip was December 9, 1979 and carrying wheat.

The Vaughn Mansion was listed in the National
Register of Historic Places on June 14, 1982.
