Granted
by Daniel Parris
The moon lingering
in the sky with a sour face.
A bright light seen,
yet neglected.
We neglect many
things, just look at the moon,
giving our homes,
our heritage, our lives a glance and shrugging them away.
Granted that we
live so short a time,
yet granted is what
we take them for.
Our school, our
home for a day, our heritage shrugged away.
Who went to that
crimson-walled building
our future?
Who built that story
we go to every day,
the one that stands
today?
Where are the people
and their families and why do we care?
This high school,
placed on a pedestal in the sky,
is beyond neglect.
Granted to us by
privileged people,
yet granted is what
we take it for.
